THE MENDED LITTLE HEARTS PROGRAM SUPPORTS CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT AWARENESS WEEK WITH NEW CHAPTER

Cleveland, OHIO – January 29, 2012 – In honor of Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) awareness week, Feb. 7 – 14, Mended Little Hearts (MLH) is announcing a new chapter in Northeastern Ohio. MLH is a support program for parents and caregivers of children with heart defects and heart disease and is dedicated to inspiring hope in those who care for the littlest heart patients of all. Affecting more than 40,000 babies every year in America, CHD are the most common birth defects in the United States.

The new MLH chapter of Northeastern Ohio is volunteering to serve a meal at the Cleveland Ronald McDonald House to help raise awareness of how many kids and families are affected by a CHD.

“Our son Myles was born with a severe congenital heart defect: double inlet left ventricle which meant he had only one pumping chamber,” said Tena Crock, member of the Northeastern Ohio MLH chapter. “In the first seven months of his life, he underwent three open-heart surgeries and one heart catheterization. He will need at least one additional heart surgery before he is school aged.”

To continue their outreach, parents and healthcare professionals are joining forces to have Feb. 7 – 14 declared as “Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week” in all cities and states. The new MLH chapter has already received commitments from the mayors of Medina, Kent, Solon and Cleveland.

Upcoming events are listed below:

• Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland Feb. 8, 5:30 P.M. – 7:30 P.M. MLH of Northeastern Ohio providing dinner to residents of the house.

• Cleveland City Hall Rotunda Feb. 14, 11:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. The City of Cleveland Department of Public Health along with the American Heart Association is having a Go Red for Women event. During this event, MLH of Northeastern Ohio will be accepting a Proclamation from the City of Cleveland to declare Feb. 7 – 14 CHD awareness week. MLH will be speaking at this event.

• Northeastern Ohio MLH chapter available to answer questions at:
o St. John’s Westshore, Feb. 7, 1:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.
o Rainbow Babies and Children Atrium, Feb. 13, 9:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.
o Cleveland Clinic, Feb. 13, 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.

“We are so proud of these cities in their commitment to recognize people born with heart defects, to remember loved ones who lost their battle to CHD and to honor the dedicated health professionals who work with us,” said Crock.
